Bonsai

General Bonsai Care

Light

Bonsai trees generally thrive in bright light. It is important to remember that “bonsai” are in fact trees and therefor need quality sunlight. Some species such as Ficus and Chinese Elm will survive indoors, however they will not thrive in comparison to those which are outdoors.

Watering

Water your bonsai when the topsoil feels dry to the touch. Ensure you wet the entire root system, allowing excess water to drain out of the bottom. During the warmer months, your trees will need more watering and depending on the type of species, it may also be beneficial to place them in water trays. However, overwatering can lead to root rot, so finding that balance is key!

Feeding

Fertilise your bonsai during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a balanced fertiliser every 4-6 weeks, and reduce feeding in autumn and winter as growth slows.

Pruning

Pruning is essential for shaping and maintaining the size of your bonsai. Regularly trim new growth to promote increased ramification and to keep its form. Leaf reduction techniques can also help maintain a miniature look.

Repotting

Repotting is typically necessary every 1-3 years. This helps to refresh the soil and encourages healthy root growth. When repotting, gently remove the tree from its pot, trim any unhealthy roots, and place it in fresh, well-draining soil.

Seasonal Care

Keep in mind that your bonsai may have different needs based on the season. Protect outdoor bonsai from harsh winter winds and consider bringing them indoors during extreme weather.

Remember, every bonsai is unique, so observe your tree and adjust care as needed. With a little love and attention, your bonsai will thrive and bring a touch of serenity to your space!
