Caring for succulents is a piece of cake! Follow these simple steps to keep your spiky buddies thriving.
1. Light Requirements
Sunshine Lovers: Succulents adore bright, indirect sunlight. A south or west-facing window is their happy place.
Avoid Shading: Too much shade can lead to leggy growth. Rotate your plants occasionally for even sun exposure.
2. Watering
Soak and Dry: Water your succulents well, then let the soil dry completely before the next watering. Aim for a schedule of every 1-3 weeks, depending on the season and humidity.
Avoid Overwatering: Yellowing leaves often signal too much water. Remember, they prefer to be drenched in sunshine, not a swamp!
3. Soil
Well-Draining Soil: Use a cactus or succulent mix for optimal drainage. You can also create your own mix using regular potting soil mixed with sand or perlite.
Don’t Fear Terracotta: Terracotta pots are great for succulents as they absorb excess moisture.
4. Temperature and Humidity
Climate Control: Succulents thrive in temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. They can handle a chill but ideally should not go below 10°C.
Low Humidity: These plants love dry air, so don’t leave them in steamy bathrooms or overly humid areas.
5. Fertilising
Less is More: Fertilise sparingly—once a month in the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulents.
Skip Winter: Don’t fertilise in winter as the plants are in their dormant phase.
6. Pruning and Repotting
Snip Snip: Remove dead leaves and spent flowers to encourage growth and keep your plant looking tip top.
Repot When Necessary: Repot every couple of years or when your succulent outgrows its pot. Choose a slightly larger pot to promote healthy growth.
7. Pest Control
Keep an Eye Out: Watch for mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. If you spot unwelcome guests, use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol or a gentle insecticidal soap to evict them.
8. Propagation
Get Your Clone On: Many succulents can be propagated from leaf cuttings or offsets. Allow the cut ends to dry for a day or two before planting them in soil.
With a dash of love and a sprinkle of care, your succulents will flourish like the quirky little rockstars they are! Happy gardening!
